Boys and grandfather go through ice and drown

Camdenton, Mo. (AP) --twin boys and their grandfather drowned in the Lake of the Ozarks Thursday when the two four-year-old children broke through ice on the lake and the grandparent attempted to rescue them.

Authorities reported the bodies of John Thomas Treat and Joseph Ryan Treat, and William F. Treat, 67, were recovered by the Missouri Division of Water Safety early Thursday afternoon. The children, who recently were adopted by the grandparents, lived with them in a home on the Big Niangua arm of the lake. They were the sons of Donnie and Carrol Treat England.

Capt. Daniel Needham, cenral division supervisor for the water safety division, said some witnesses reported the boys had gone onto the ice to rescue a small pet dog, but other witnesses said the children had tried to retrieve a Frisbee.

Capt. Needham said the two children were about 200 feet from shore and near the edge of an ice sheet which reached almost to the main channel of the river. He said the ice was 1 ½ to 2 inches thick and the young boys tumbled into five or six feet of water.

Investigators said the elderly Treat was a heart patient and may have experienced a fatal seizure when he fell through the ice.
