Obituary for Mrs. Robert Vance, appearing in the Belleville (Kansas) Telescope - 18 Apr 1940.

Mary T. Abbott, oldest child of John and Malinda Abbott, was born in McClain [McLean] county, Ill., July 12, 1857 and died April 9, 1940.

She was united in marriage February 28, 1878, to Robert Vance at Lawndale, Ill., where they made their home until 1883 when with the three older children they moved to Kansas, locating on a farm southwest of Byron. They later moved to the farm north of Republic where they lived until the fall of 1908 when they moved to their home in Republic. She with her husband saw many hardships of the pioneer life.

Her husband preceded her in death four years ago on January 4, 1936. To their union were born seven children, four having preceded her in death; one in infancy, Clara at the age of three, Ella, 18, and Ernest I., 54.

At an early age she became a member of the Baptist church at Lexington, Ill., later transferring her membership to the Baptist church in Republic. After the abandonment of the Baptist church she united with the United Brethren where she continued a faithful attendant and a loyal servant of Christ.

Her one delight was in her home with her family and it was there she spent her happiest hours. She was modest and retiring and in her quiet way did much good.

She leaves to cherish her memory one son and two daughters, Lewis M. Vance of Cottonwood Falls, Mrs. Nettie B. Mercer of Logan, Okla., and Mrs. Ida V. Willis of Republic; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Leuan (sp) Simms of Belleville; many other relatives and a host of friends.

She has been an active member of the Ladies' Aid society, of the Kings Daughters Sunday school class, of which she was a former teacher, also a member of the Ladies Library club, having served as president of this club several years.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, April 14, at the United Brethren church in Republic, conducted by the Rev. Gertrude Pettilom (sp), with interment made at the Washington cemetery.
