Because of persecution, his father moved with his third wife to Canada when Charles was nine years old, leaving him in Millville to help care for his mother. He contracted typhoid at age seventeen and was left with "milk leg," which troubled him throughout his life.
On March 27, 1902, he married Hidive Caroline Nielson. She was born January 25, 1883, the daughter of Ola and Carrie Nielson.
In 1907 Charles was called on an LDS mission to Sweden, but his bad leg kept him home. He held many responsible positions in both the Church and the community. He served in the bishopric, was ward clerk for twenty-four years and a temple officiator for twenty-one years. He was town clerk for many years, and he was mayor when electricity came to Millville in 1919. He farmed and also did carpentry work. He enjoyed gardening and raising beautiful flowers.
Hidvie held many positions in the auxiliary organizations, especially in Relief Society. She sang in the ward choir most of her life. She and Charles served on the Old Folks Committee. She enjoyed all kinds of handwork and was an excellent homemaker. She died October 16, 1969.
Charles and Hidvie were the parents of: Florence Christine (Newell Olson), Sylvester Charles (Arlene Larsen), Alvaretta Hidvie (Leon Mickleson), Wilford Clarence (Lenora Larsen), Lewis Clenneth (Olla Jenson), Irene Cecelia (died in infancy), Delbert Carol (died in infancy), Lucinda Coy (Arnold Dickey), Radah Beth (Darwin Barker) and Clarice (Bruce Petersen).
