Grace is the daughter of Nathaniel and Grace (Mendenhall) Vernon. Nathaniel lived in Georgia for 35 years, fighting for the colonies in the Revolutionary War. About 1780 he married Grace Mendenhall. They came to Ohio in 1805. Grace's mother is said to have been massacred by the Creek Indians about 1781 near Atlanta. Nathaniel and Grace had eight children: Grace md. Ezekial Mote; Tamor b. 1785; Margaret b. 1788 d. 1869 in Miami Co., OH; Lydia, b. 1788; William b. 1793 d. 1795; Thomas b. 1796; Samuel b. 1799 d 1818 in Miami Co., OH; Ann b. 1802. Nathaniel died in 1816 in Miami Co., OH.
