As the clock was chiming two this afternoon the Death Messenger called for Grandpa Briggs at the home of his son, M. S. Briggs, south of town, finding him ready for the command. A stroke of paralysis two weeks ago, and another last Friday, was the cause of death.
Job Briggs was born at McConnelsville, Ohio, May 30, 1826, and at the age of thirteen came to Salem, Iowa, where he lived until 1852, when, during the excitement due to the discovery of gold in California, with companions, traversed the extent of the west to Placerville, California, where he mined for four years. having accumulated considerable money, he returned to his home, vis Isthmus of Panama, and Havana, Cuba, and New York City. In 1857, on the 18th of April, he was married to Mary Anne Frame, and lived in the little Quaker village of Salem, Iowa, until the death of his wife, which occurred Oct. 4, 1894. Since then he has made his home with his son, M. S. Briggs, in this city and Salem, Iowa.
Of the union of Job Briggs and his wife there were born four children, the oldest, Adolph Lauriston Briggs, who was killed by an engine running over at Rock Bridge, Ill., Mach 3, 1890, leaving a wife and three children, now of Medora, Ill. The next was M. S. Briggs, living here with his family, W. F. Briggs, who has lived in Oakland, California, until about three months ago, and since the sickness of Mr. Briggs repeated telegrams were not able to reach him. The remaining child, W. O. Briggs, died at the age of seven, of scarlet fever, at Salem, Iowa.
The funeral will be held at Salem, Iowa, and in charge of the Masonic lodge, and the remains will rest beside his wife who has preceded him thirteen years. the remains will leave here on the early morning train tomorrow, and will be accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. M. S. Briggs.
