Alford M. Martin really wasn't sure which year he was born. His wife often said, "He don't know when he was born."
Since he was the 3rd child born to Joshua and Frenetta . . . and the first two children were born in 1872 (Esther Geer) and 1873 (George Martin, who died in childhood), it makes sense that Alford wasn't born until early 1875. I think the 1880 Census seems to back this up.
So his actual birth year was probably 1875.
