Sumpter was married at least 4 times. His first marriage was to Flora Haskin. They had a son, Alvin and a daughter, Armetta Christine.

Sumpter suffered the tragic loss of his daughter, Christine, and his grandson, Terry. Christine's second husband murdered them.

Sumpter was also a soldier in WWII.
