Joseph Powell Laid to Rest Monday Afternoon

News of the death of Joseph Powell came as a shock to his friends Saturday morning, many of whom did not know he was ill. Although his health had not been good all winter, he did not become ill until Monday of last week. On Thursday he went to the hospital, where an operation was performed which revealed that his condition was even more critical than had been thought. Saturday morning, March 4, 1933, he passed away at 8 o'clock. His age was seventy-two years, seven months and one day.
He was born August 3, 1859 on the home place west of Cook and was a son of Steven and Isabel Mapps Powell. The place where he was born was pre-empted land, and he was born in a log cabin. Throughout his entire life he lived on the same farm, which is an unusual record for any man.
His marriage to Mary A. Wilson took place at Tecumseh on February 3, 1897, and to them were born six children. Wilbur Joseph died Feb. 10, 1907. Those living are Susie Haverkamp, Virginia; Wilson Powell, Burr, Steven Powell, Cook; Thomas Powell, and Bernice Eisenhauer, both of Burr.
Deceased was a farmer, and his ambition of life was for welfare of his wife, children, and country.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 1:30 at his late home. Many were present to pay their last respects to his memory. Rev. C. H. Zimmerman of the Virginia Christian church conducted the services, and interment was in the Cook cemetery.
The sorrowing family have the sympathy of their friends.
