Alpheus was born in Woodstock, Maine, February 28, 1845, the youngest of eight children and died at his home in Sturgis on Wednesday, January 9, 1929.
Alpheus spent his boyhood days in Maine, moving with his parents to Monticello, Wisconsin in 1852, where he made his home until 1871. He then moved to Fayette County, Iowa where he was married to Miss Ellen Francis Goodall. In 1877, with two children they moved to Dakota territory by ox team and covered wagon and settled near Lake Herman, Lake County. Here the family lived until 1908 when they moved to Vale. By 1920 he left the farm in the care of one of his sons and moved to Sturgis where his eldest daughter kept house for him in his declining years.
Alpheus and Ellen had seven children; Lucy, Claude, Milo, Paul, Victor, Alice and Ralph.
