James Conmee, MPP, MP., Born in the "Irish Block", Sydenham, Grey, Ont. son of Mathew Conmee and Rosanna O'Shaughnessey. Served in the Civil War along side of his brother John in Custer's unit. He was a Sawyer in Centerville where in 12 Oct 1874 he married Emily Florence Cox whose father operated a saw mill. James came to run a sawmill in Meaford and, by 1872, removed to Fort William becoming a contractor for the CPR (Canadian Pacific Railroad). He started the Port Arthur Telephone Company, and became the Mayor of Port Arthur (now Thunder Bay). He became a Minister for the Provincial Parliament and later a Minister of the Parliament of Canada for six years. The DCB finds Conmee "arguably the major political figure of his generation in northern Ontario." His sister Margaret Conmee m. John Lloyd, sawyer of Meaford, County Gray, Ontario. Their son Marshall Burns Lloyd invented the Lloyd loom.
