Survivors include a niece, Mary Kathryn Laney of Rogersville; two step-daughters, Jackie Whitlock of Springfield, and Beverly Fredrick of La Jolla, CA; five step-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren whom she adored.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Woodrow Wilson Smith, her second husband, Robert C. Jorgensen, her parents and her step-father, Arnold Merk.
Thelma was raised in West Plains, Missouri, graduated from West Plains High School and Missouri State University. She lived most of her adult life in Springfield and was a long time teacher at Sunshine Elementary School. She was a member of Second Baptist Church.
Graveside services will be Monday, July 20, 2009 at 10:00 AM in Springfield National Cemetery under the care of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home.
