They only had one child, Mary Elizabeth who was born after Jim returned from fighting overseas in WWI. They lived in Northeast Kansas City in the same house for many years until moving to a house he built north of the river (where we lived) around 1955....
We have a picture of him in his youth with the violin he played. He was raised in Bland, Mo., and was at one time a blacksmith then a mechanic working on the early automobiles. He worked for the railroad and was a carpenter and house builder. He worked many years for Montgomery Wards and was head of their maintenance department. He retired at the age of 75. He and my grandmother then would travel to Canada, Lake of the Ozarks and Table Rock Lake on fishing trips. He was always active and would build a house every year then sell the one they lived in and move to the new one. He loved sketching, gardening, building houses, carpenter work, making his own fishing lures and reading his bible. He was the kindest most caring person, a true gentleman. He was a 6' tall, big boned man with huge hands! Buying gloves for him was hard sometimes the ex-large were not big enough. He loved telling stories and jokes. My grandmother was barely 5'tall they were adorable together the perfect grandparents.
They had one daughter, two grandchildren, and 5 g-grandchildren.
He is a veteran of WWI in the Army, new info I just found he served in Regiment Co D 163rd Infantry Rank Corporal. Departure Date: 3 Feb 1919 Departure Place: Brest, France. He was a lifetime member of the Masons.
