Wife of James E Phelps and daughter of Flavius Alexander and Eugenia A Wheeler Stewart. Her father named her Hallie Octavia as she was the 8th born. She and Jim had one child, my mother Mary Elizabeth Phelps.

Hallie graduated high school in Paola in 1909. She went to St. Louis to attend secretarial school. She had two sisters and a brother there attending dental and nursing school.
It was fun when I was in high school I learned shorthand, Hop and my mom both knew shorthand and had worked as secretaries using it. We could read our notes. I believe shorthand is no longer used. Her brother Ivy went to dental school and two sisters Sarah (Inez) and Mary E attended Missouri Baptist Hospital School of Nursing.

She met my grandfather Jim Phelps in Kansas City. They married 24 April 1918 in Kansas City, Mo. They live in the Northeast area on North Topping for many many years, moving around 1953 when they built a house close to where my parents who lived in Gladstone, Clay County, Mo.

She was raised a Baptist and in later years after they moved North of the river, they joined Fairview Christian church where our whole family were charter members. She was a Sunday School teacher for their adult class. They made many friends there and loved playing cards together and pot luck dinners. I can remember her baking pies and cookies while always singing and whistling her favorite songs from church. She was a great fisherman and is a good thing because grandpa loved it. After grandpa Jim retired (even before that) they traveled to Canada,Table Rock and many times to the Lake of The Ozarks fishing. They had friends that owned a little resort with fishing cabins called 'Bill and Vals' at the Ozarks. Great crappie and bass fishing many wonderful memories for the whole family and lots of fish dinners! She a member of the Eastern Star.

They were the best grandparents ever, I have many happy memories and feel blessed to have been their granddaughter. They were always loving, kind, generous and always supportive. To all her grandchildren and g-grandchildren her name was Hop, I have no idea why (we named her that when we were babies) but it did fit her initials. Would tease her and make her laugh would call her Hoppoo!

She made me promise not to put her birthday on her headstone! So we didn't. But she was born on February 22, George Washington's birthday (different year of course!)either 1888 or 1889.
