Civil War: Company F, 3rd California Infantry

James Luttrell was born at Tipperary, Ireland, about 1832. He immigrated to the United States and headed for California where he worked as a boilermaker. During the Civil War he enlisted for 3 years as a private at San Francisco on October 30, 1861, and was mustered into Company F, 3rd California Infantry, at Stockton November 1. James was 28 years old, 5 ft. 7 in. tall, with light blue eyes and light brown hair. He indicated his next-of-kin as John Luttrell, then living at Dunnville, Haldimand County, Ontario, Canada. Among his military duties were herding government livestock, serving with the regiment's 12-lb. mountain howitzer battery, and supervising the making of bricks. Private Luttrell was due to be discharged October 29, 1864, but he did not arrive at Camp Union (Sacramento) to be mustered out until January 9, 1865. After the war James eventually settled at Gold Hill, Jackson County, Oregon. He filed for a Civil War veterans pension at Gold Hill August 12, 1890, and received application No. 854,634 and certificate No. 629,047. No record was found of a marriage.
