Archibald Allen arrived in 1828, he was one of the first settlers in the area of Port Byron, IL. In 1831 during the Blackhawk War, he took his family to Fort Armstrong for safety and then joined Capt Pike's Rock River Rangers. He carried the between Fort Armstrong and Galena from 1833 to 1834. He established the first post office on the mainland of Rock Island in Canaan Rock Island. He was the postmaster and carried the mail in 1836.
