Edith (Mattei) Page Age 90, of Wilmington, DE, passed away Wednesday morning, December 29, 1999.

Edith was born in Northern Italy on February 22, 1909 to the late Lionello & Delores (Vignola) Mattei. She came to Wilmington when she was just 5 years old. At age 11, she began taking piano lessons and by age 16 was an accomplished pianist, playing for silent movies at the Park and Broadway Theaters. With the arrival of the "talkies", theater musicians were no longer needed and she became a seamstress.

During her twenties, Edith played the organ for the Christmas Holidays at the former John Wanamaker's store on Augustine Cut-Off. She later moved to Oak Orchard, DE where she owned and operated several restaurants. The Old Bell Inn of Georgetown, DE was her first, where she cooked and played the piano. She was even featured in a newspaper article in the 1960's for her excellent crab cake recipe.

With all her accomplishments, however, her piano was her first love. Her music will be greatly missed by her loving family and friends.

Edith is survived by her sister, Esther Panaro of Millbrae, CA; her brothers, Arnold Mattei of Chadds Ford, PA and Arthur Mattei of Hockessin; and 17 nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Anthony of Padua R.C. Church, 9th & DuPont Sts. on Monday morning, January 3, 2000 at 11:30 a.m. Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the church. Interment will follow Mass in Cathedral Cemetery.

Memorial donations in Edith's memory may be made to Delaware Hospice, 3515 Silverside Road, Wilmington, DE 19810.
