William Bettin was born in Paetznick, Pommerine, Germany on September 17, 1849 . On the 25th day of March 1875, he married Miss Bertha Rogge from which matrimony nine children were derived, but one son, and one daughter died at an early age, about 1885 he came to Iowa. After he had changed residence several times and had resided since one year in Diamond Township, Cherokee County.

He suffered about 7 years of cancer of the stomach, and this sickness caused his death on the 13th day of May 1902. His age was 52 years, 9 months, 26 days.

The widow, 7 daughters of whom 4 are living with their mother, two brothers and two sisters mourn his loss. (Daughters known are: Elizabeth, Helena, Anna, Martha, Grace, & Bertha Parsons married Arthur Stanley Parsons; granddau.: Lainys Erma Parsons Groves, aka Lenora Faye Parsons ~ 1919-1975.)

The funeral was held Thursday, May 15 at 2 o'clock from the Diamond M.E. Church and he was buried in the Diamond Cemetery. Rev. Max, paster of the Aurelia German Evangelical church preached the funeral sermon in German. Rev. O. M. Bond and the Diamond Church Choir assisted in the service.
