Alexander McPhaul is my Great Great Grandfather!!

He is the son of John McPhaul and ?

He is the brother of: Archibald "Arch" McPhaul, Daniel McPhaul, Flora McPhaul Blackwell, Campbell McPhaul, William McPhaul, Margaret Ann McPhaul Stricklin/Strickland, Johh McPhaul, James A. McPhaul and Mary Elizabeth McPhaul Thurmond.

Their father, John McPhaul dies on 15 May 1847. Brothers Archibald, Daniel and Alexander were listed as guardians of the minor children through 1858.

Brother Arch McPhaul died "of disease" at Knoxville, Tennessee on 7 Feb 1863. Alexander is appointed administrator of his estate on 25 June 1863.

He married Nancy Portress/Poythress before 1850.

They are known to be the parents of the following children: Francis Marion "Bud" McPhaul, William F. McPhaul, Mary Lorena McPhaul, James A. McPhaul, Martha Julia McPhaul Gray, Sarah/Sallie McPhaul Hewatt and John McPhaul.

Alexander is counted in the census of 1830 and 1840 with the family in Gadsden County, Florida. Alexander is first listed in Gadsden County tax rolls as a land owner of 80 acres in 1848. He also declared a silver watch. In 1850 he is listed as head of household, with wife Nancy and first -born Marion "Bud". He served for several years as guardian to the minor children of his late father, and by 1859 was farming 160 acres.

He enlisted in Company B, 5th Battn, Florida Cavalry, CSA from Quincy, Florida on 12 Feb 1863. His grandson, Horace Hewatt said that he was wounded at Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. He is on the list of prisoners surrendered at Tallahassee 10 May 1865, and paroled 17 May 1865. He was a first sergeant by the end of the war.

Although Alexander and his family are not listed on the 1870 census at Bastrop County, Texas, he is listed s owning 300 acres of land and one horse on the 1870 Bastrop County tax rolls, and I have a copy of a grocer's bill dated in 1869, all indicating that the family was in Bastrop County by 1869. Alexander and Nancy appear on several real estate transactions in Bastrop County in 1876 and are counted in the 1880 census by name. He was a famer; after Nancy's death, he last appeared on the 1900 census living with his son -in-law Joseph Gray at age 75.
