Lewis Back was a son of Henry & Susannah (Maggard) Back. He was a third great grandson of the organist and composer Johann Christoph Bach (1642–1743), who was a first cousin, once removed, of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750). Johann Christoph Bach was in his time the most famous member of the musical Bach family, renowned throughout Germany for his virtuosity at the organ.

Lewis married Winnie Sumner, and they lived on Rockhouse Creek, in Letcher County. They had six children: Nancy; Betty (married Bud Blair); Sally (married Elihu Blair); Judy (married Mose Hampton); John (married Tiny Cody); and Cinda (married Hoover Adams).
