John Campbell was born April 22, 1853 in Fort Edward, New York. He was the son of John and Mary (Quinn) Campbell both of Ireland. His father died when he was nine years old and his mother remarried a man named James Downing. John's first wife was also a Campbell, no relation, her name was Anna. They were married in New York City and had two children together Margaret and John Jr., Anna died in 1887 during child birth of a third child. For a short period John and Anna lived in New York City, according to the 1880 census. However according to land records he was back living in Fort Edward in 1883. His second wife was Susan Buchanan, a nannie from County Donegal that worked for a family in Fort Edward. John and Susan were married April 29, 1890 at St. Joseph's Church in Fort Edward. John worked most of his life as a paper maker. Late in life he was a night security gaurd. He and Susan had 6 children, Anna, Mary, Helen, Willie, Susan and Joseph. He lived most of his life on Upper Broadway in a home formerly owned by a cousin Rose Rigney. Several homes down was the home of his mother Mary Ann, where she lived in 1900 with his brother Thomas, sister Roseanna, and half brother William Downing. He died December 29, 1939 from pneumonia which he contracted after suffering a broken hip. He died in Glens Falls Hospital and was buried in St. Josephs Cemetery in Fort Edward.
