Velma M. Cade Hughes

Velma M. Cade Hughes was called home to be with the Lord on Aug. 13, 2007.

Born Oct. 17, 1920, on a beautiful October Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m., she was the second daughter of Fred and Marie Carbiener born at home on the farm in Bremen, Ind.

She attended Country School until sixth grade. She then attended Lakeville School and Lakeville High. She was not athletic but liked academics and drama, performing in high school plays. She took piano lessons as well.

She moved to California in 1938. At the age of 17 1/2, she worked in the family restaurant on Ventura Boulevard in Encino, where she met her husband-to-be, Ivan Cade. They dated for 1 1/2 years before marrying in June 1940 and were married 39 years.

From 1976 to 1985 Velma cared for her dear mother, who died at age 91. At the same time, she continued to care for Ivan until his passing in 1980. She moved to Leisure Village in 1984. In 1990 she married Hal Hughes and spent two years with him before his unexpected passing in 1992. She became a world traveler and enjoyed seeing the sights of the world.

Velma was baptized in Tarzana at the age of 18. She attended Newburg Christina Church in Oregon; Hillcrest in Granada Hills; and Cornerstone Church in Northridge, where she served as deaness and taught Sunday school to children for more than 25 years before coming to Camarillo Christian Church.

In 1986 she became a caregiver at the hospital and served there up until her passing. She was a member of the Red Hat Club, served at Leisure Village, helped prepare meals for Meals on Wheels for four years, supported Veterans of Foreign Wars and Paralyzed Veterans of Foreign Wars. At Camarillo Christian Church, she headed up the communion preparation ministry for more than 15 years, coordinated monthly dinners for Saints Alive and would help collate bulletins almost every Friday for eight to 10 years.

Velma is survived by her siblings, Del Carbiener (wife Mary), Marjorie Richardson (husband Robert) and Devon Carbiener (wife Yu); and many loving nephews and nieces and their families.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at Camarillo Christian Church, 1777 Arneill Road, Camarillo. Interment will be beside her husband, Hal, in Oakwood Memorial Park, Chatsworth.
