William Allen Buchanan parents were John Buchanan 1783 – 1850 and Elizabeth Gouge 1802 – 1885. He was of Scottish extraction. His grand parents hailed from Aberdeenshire, Scotland. He had only 1 known siblings, George W Buchanan, born in Burke, North Carolina and died in Hawkins Co., Tennessee. He had many half siblings.

U.S. and International Marriage Records,confirms that William Allen Buchanan became the groom of Harriet Setzer in 1855 in North Carolina

It has been learned from family sources that on Aug. 23, 1855 Allen married Sarah Harriet Setser in Caldwell Co., North Carolina, and before 1859 they moved to Hawkins Co., Tennessee where they had 5 known children: Millard Fillmore Buchanan 1859 – 1892, he married Barsheba Locke; Winfield S Buchanan 1861, he married Sarah E Buchanan; Sarah C Buchanan 1863 – 1929, she married John F Painter; Robert Grant Buchanan 1866 – 1954, he married Mary Dorthula Short; and Alice Buchanan 1869, Alice died very young.

The 1870 census stated that Allen and Harriet Buchanan were living with George and Elizabeth White in Russellville, Hawkins Co. Tennessee. About 1871, Sarah Harriet passed away.

On Oct. 30. 1873, William Allen Buchanan picked up the pieces after losing Sarah Harriet and married Elizabeth Jane Hawkins. Together they had 6 children: Lucinda Loport Buchanan 1874 – 1950, she married James Martin Synamon; James Allen Buchanan 1876 – 1940, he married Mattie Peavler; George Alexander Buchanan 1877 – 1936, he married Marthia "Mattie" Ellen Gibson; Mary Elizabeth Buchanan 1880 – 1954; Chester Venoy Buchanan 1881 – 1944, he married Viola Knox; Joseph Andrew Buchanan 1887 – 1946, he married Katherine; and Effie M Buchanan 1890.

The 1900 census revealed that Allen and Elizabeth were living on a farm that they owned in the 12th district South of Stage Road in Hawkins Co., Tennessee. Living at home were Mary E., Venoy C., Joseph A., and Effie M.

A very sad day arrived on March 17, 1904. William Allen Buchanan's spirit left him to return to God, his maker. A couple of days later his body was taken to the Quarryville Cemetery, where his wife, children and friends gathered at a very pretty burial site to bid their beloved husband, father and friend farewell.
