His siblings were: Lucinda Loport Buchanan 1874 – 1950; Alice Buchanan 1869; James Allen Buchanan 1876 – 1940, he married Mattie Peavler; George Alexander Buchanan 1877 – 1936, he married Marthia "Mattie" Ellen Gibson; Mary Elizabeth Buchanan 1880 – 1954; Chester Venoy Buchanan 1881 – 1944, he married Viola Knox; Joseph Andrew Buchanan 1887 – 1946, he married Katherine; and Effie M Buchanan 189o.
On April 29, 1896, James claimed Martha "Mattie" S Peavler or his bride. From this union they were blessed with 3 known children, David P Buchanan 1899 - 1924, Ada B Buchanan 1902 – 1909 and Elsie M Buchanan 1907.
Oct. 29, 1909 was a heartbreaking day for James and Mattie. Their precious little 7 year, Ada, passed away. They selected a burial plot for her at the Petty Cemetery. With the support of family and friends, they gathered around her small coffin as they laid their precious little girl to rest.
In 1920 James was a farmer, he owned his farm without a mortgage. his son David, 20, Elsie, 13, were in School. His 80 year old mother-in-law, Lucinda Stuffle Peavler, was living with them.
June 16, 1924, was another distressing day in the life of Jim and Mattie. Their 25 year old son, David P. Buchanan, who had been working as a reporter in Knoxville, had died. His death certificate reveals that he was single and living in the Huston Apts. in Knoxville. He had been taken to the Knoxville General Hospital, suffering, and died from a perforated duodenal ulcer. James was the informant. David was also near his sister in the Petty Cemetery.
Aug 29, 1926 was a very sad day for James, and Elsie. Their dear wife and mother, Martha "Mattie" S Peavler Buchanan, passed away. A plot was chosen for her final resting place in the Petty cemetery, near her two children. The James and his only surviving daughter, and friends were at her burial site to bid their beloved to Rest in Peace.
On the Nov. 18, 1933, James, daughter married Tom Johnson, and the April 1, 1940 census revealed that James was living in Mooresburg Unincorporated. He owned his farm. The house was valued at $1000.00. He was not working, but had other income. His daughter and son in-in-law were living with him. Elsie Johnson had completed 4 years of Collage, and now was a High School teacher with a salary of $560.00 a month. His Son-in-law, Tom Johnson, was a farmer, and worked every week of the year farming the home farm. He also claimed to have other income.
On May 2, 1940 at 1:30 pm, just 64 years and 7 day after his birth, James Allen Buchanan exhaled his last breath, and his spirit returned to God his maker. His death certificate said he had been suffering from Nephritis for one year. Nephritis is inflammation of the nephrons in the kidneys. The informant was his daughter Elsie Johnson. His body was taken to the Taylor Funeral Home to be prepared for burial on May 4, 1940 at the Petty Cemetery. He was buried near his beloved family in the Petty Cemetery.
