Harold G. Brackett, 73, a devoted husband, father and grandfather, died peacefully with his family by his side, on Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, at Christus St. John.
Born Feb. 17, 1936 in Etowah to the late E.B. and Blan Brackett, he was preceded in death by one brother, Tom Brackett. Chief Petty Officer Brackett honorably served our country in the U.S. Navy as a medic, including two tours in Vietnam. He retired after 26 years of service and, upon discharge, was employed as a supervisor at Galveston Ship Building Company. As a young man, he was known by the nickname "Satch," and played the trumpet expertly, of which he was considered the best in his class back home in Englewood. He had a passion for fishing, backgammon and crossword puzzles. Additionally, he was blessed with three granddaughters, who were his inspiration. He touched so many lives with his quiet strength and genuine devotion to the ones he loves, especially his dogs over the years, most notably Charlie.
Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 46 years, Beverly Brackett; one daughter, Sheri Saunders and her husband, Matthew, of Plano, Texas; one son, Martin Brackett of Plano, Texas; three granddaughters, Summer and Kristen Saunders and Mikayla Brackett; one sister, Shirley Land and husband, Bill, of Chattanooga; and two nieces, Wendy and Michelle.
He will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery.
Forest Park East Funeral Home of Webster, Texas is in charge of arrangements.
