Joseph Weinfass (1881-1966)

Siblings:
Abraham Weinfass (1908-1925)

Louis was 19 years, 4 months, 22 days old at the time of his death. His younger brother Abraham died at the age of 16 from rheumatic fever 2 months prior.

It was 1 day after Benjamin Schwartz's 18th birthday so we might assume that the outing was to celebrate his birthday.

Friends who also died with Louis on this date:
Simon Lichtenfeld (1903-1925)
Benjamin Schwartz (1907-1925)

The elongated lintel straddles the graves of the 3 boys who died on the same day on the same outing.

Inscription of the elongated stone:
IN MEMORY OF OUR COMRADES
IN LIFE TOGETHER
IN DEATH TOGETHER

TRIPLE FUNERAL FOR YOUTHS
WHO LOST LIVES ON OUTING

Bodies of Two Who Were Drowned and
Auto Victim to Be Buried in Adjoining Graves

A triple funeral will be held this afternoon for three young men who lost their lives on an outing in Illinois Sunday afternoon. They are Benjamin Schwartz, 18 years old of 2737 Dickson Street and Louis Weinfass, 18, of 4221 Page Boulevard, who were drowned in the Okaw River, near Okawville, Illinois and Simon Lichtenfeld, 20 years old, 4032 Evans Avenue, who was fatally injured in an auto accident while speeding for help for his companions. Weinfass lost his life trying to rescue Schwartz.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at an undertaking establishment at 4715 McPherson Avenue and the bodies will be laid in adjoining graves in the Chesed Shel Emeth Cemetery.

Funeral Home:
Berger Memorial, St. Louis, Missouri

Officiating at the funeral services were:
Rabbi Abraham B. Goldenson and Rabbi Adolph Rosentreter.

A remembrance plaque was purchased by the family at Brith Sholom Kneseth Israel Congregation, Richmond Heights, Missouri to memorialize Abraham and his brother Louis. On the anniversary (Yahrzeit) of their deaths they are remembered during Sabbath services. Their names are read aloud.

I am not a member of this family but I felt compelled to tell the story of Benjamin, Louis, and Simon and the tragedy of their loss. If you are members of these families and have accessed this page and have questions about my research into the details of that tragic week in 1925, I would be happy to hear from you.
