Sam emigrated to the United States in 1914 when he was 24. He came to Iowa as that is where his family had settled in the late 1890's. He became a junk dealer in Cedar Rapids where he lived until his death. He married Edith Kitzis in August 1915, soon after she arrived from Russia. They were the parents of Dr. Maurice Estes and Irene Estes Wolff.
