Ebenezer Fillmore was born in 1815 in New York. His parents have not been identified. He was married in 1836 in Jasper, Steuben County, New York to Harriet Bessey. In 1840, the couple lived in nearby Genesee, Potter County, Pennsylvania with two children (Eliphalet and Phebe). In 1850, the Fillmore family lived in Jasper. They moved to Rome township, Lenawee County, Michigan between 1857 and 1859, traveling down the Erie Canal.

Ebenezer enlisted on 9 May 1863 at Rome, Lenawee County in Company L of the First Michigan Engineers and Mechanics. He lied on his enlistment papers stating he was 25 instead of almost 48. He worked as a cook during the war, reportedly using his money to help his fellow soldiers and not his family. After the war he returned to Michigan and the Fillmores moved north to Long Lake township, Grand Traverse County in May 1866. The following year saw son Wilson killed by a falling tree.

Ebenezer worked in the winter as a lumberman and farmed during the summer. In 1877, the couple took in Harriet's niece Charity Schanck, an adult woman with mental problems (perhaps epilepsy). In 1883, the Fillmores attempted to have her institutionalized, perhaps because of their advanced age. She died in 1884. Ebenezer applied for a Civil War disability pension in 1886, and two years later he began to receive $24 a month. Ebenezer died in 1895 at his daughter Susanah's house from cardiac dropsy and pneumonia.
