George Barrett was born in 1831 in Vermont to D. Cantlin Barrett and Mary/Polly Odell. His family descended from a proud colonial family, and Revolutionary War patriot, Capt. Bartholomew Barrett of the 9th Regiment of the Albany County, New York militia. His parents were pioneers migrating from Danby, Rutland, Vermont to Burton, Geauga County, Ohio in 1835/1836. George was enrolled to study law when he suffered a devastating brain injury in working for the railroad, which would make him an "idiot" or in other words, diabled, on the US Census of 1850 for Geauga Co., OH. As the family migrated westward from Ohio, through Wisconsin and on to Minnesota, George stayed with his mother, Mary, and ultimately was committed to St. Peter State Hospital in 1869, and transferred to Rochester State Hospital in 1881. He died at Rochester State Hospital in 1899 after residing there for 18 years. He is buried in the Rochester State Hospital Cemetery at Quarry Hill Nature Preserve (actually the earlier Rosemont Cemetery has not been found on the property), now being suited with markers in respect of past oversight. George's marker is one of those that has been added.
