Case, Lois 'Jean' - 88
05/21/1921 - 08/11/2009

"Lois" to her siblings, "Jean" to friends and family, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2009, in McMinnville, a week after deciding to stop kidney dialysis so she could join her beloved husband, Mark, and celebrate his 97th birthday on Aug. 22. Lois Jean Pettey was born in Portland May 21, 1921, and moved to various locations with her parents, Robert Bruce Pettey and Maud Brown Pettey. Jean finished high school in Baker and moved to Portland following graduation to attend business college. She graduated in 1939 from Northwest Business College and began her career in insurance. She met and married Mark Cummings Case in 1940. She worked in the court systems for Judge Mundorf while Mark served in Germany and throughout Europe with the military during World War II. Jean belonged to the Business Womens Association and was a life member of the VFW Auxiliary, Beaverton Post 4617. Upon Mark's return from the service in 1945, they moved to Beaverton and started their family. Their only son, Steve, joined them in January 1948. They built Beaverton Bowl in 1955 and ran it until 1976, when they retired and moved to Beaver to enjoy the fishing and boating on Mercer Lake and the Oregon coast. They traveled extensively after retirement and relocated to McMinnville in 1990 to be closer to medical facilities. Jean enjoyed bowling, fishing, cooking, reading, shopping and gambling and celebrated her 88th birthday in Reno with her sister, Doris. She loved classical music and gardening, even on her little patio at the retirement home. Steve and Judy moved her treasured Meyer lemon tree to three different patios in the last five years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mark in 2003; and her brother, Raymond "Bud" Pettey of Salem. She is survived by her sister, Doris Anderson of Ridgefield, Wash.; her only son, Steven, and his wife, Judy of Rose Lodge; grandchildren, Konnie (Mario) Nunez of Gresham, Ken (Marge) Hurd of East Portland, Deneen (Bill) Bonner of Gladstone; Pastor Cynthia Harris of Dallas, Texas; and Erin Johnson Curtis (Aaron) of Longview, Wash.; great-grandchildren, Amanda, David, Tyler, McKenna, McKayla, Gabriel and Hannah; six nieces and nephews; and adopted family, Leah and Elliott Bloom of McMinnville, who will be forever grateful for her amazing love and kindness. Jean never forgot a birthday or an anniversary and will be greatly missed by all. A private service will be at 11 a.m., Monday, Aug. 17, 2009, in Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, where she will be interred with her husband, Mark. Jean loved all animals; in lieu of flowers, please contribute to Homeward Bound Animal Shelter in McMinnville.
