He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Fusilier Simon Annis and Fusilier Louis Carter were trying to carry their injured section commander, LCpl Fullarton, to safety when a second roadside bomb killed all three. They had been on a foot patrol near Sangin in Helmand province.

Aged 24, from Coventry. LCpl Fullarton joined the army in November 2003 and served in Northern Ireland, Cyprus, Jordan and two tours in Iraq. "Fully" was known for his strength and physical fitness and enjoyed sports such as football and boxing. He was described as a preeminent soldier and role model respected by all around him.

LCpl Fullarton became engaged during leave in June and was excitedly anticipating his wedding next year. He leaves behind his parents Janice and Peter, twin sister Samantha, younger sister Natalie, fiancée Leanne and other relatives.

The funeral, with full military honours, held on September 9, 2009 at Coventry Cathedral was attended by some 1600 mourners.

A memorial bench at Canley Crematorium honouring Coventry soldiers LCpl James Fullarton, Fus Shaun Bush and Spr Mellors was unveiled on May 4, 2010.
