Viola Alice (Stalter) Malin was the daughter of David K. Stalter and Prudence Viola Deringer. Her mother died when she was less than a year old, and she and her brother were raised for a number of years by their maternal grandmother, especially during her father's service during the Civil War. She married Henry H. Malin at Upper Sandusky, Wyandot County, Ohio on August 8, 1878. They later moved to Walnut, Bureau County, Illinois. She died just a few days following the birth of her fifth child, on April 5, 1888.
