James was a farmer. His brother John was a prominent citizen of the area and helped found St. John's Catholic church and the cemetery with the same name in which he and his wife, Dina, and the two Thomas' and Catherine remains rest.
James worked hard and married on Feb. 8th 1899 to Mary Jane Roberts, who was 20 years old at the time. They had eight children; Earl, Thomas, Lawrence, Viola, Edward, Margaret, Everett and Donald. Margaret died at three years old. They worked hard, played cards, went to dances at the local Hall and were a tight clan. James died Sept. 27, 1939 from stomach cancer said to have been caused by a kick from a horse. He was laid to rest at St. Mary's in Wood River. Everett, Donald, Thomas, Viola and James' wife, Mary Jane relocated during the war to Seattle Washington. When Mary Jane died. Her remains were brought back to Nebraska to rest beside her husband's.
