Mary Elizabeth Guilford was the daughter of Aaron Gilford/Guilford Jr. (1782-1824) and his wife Abigail Peabody (1788-1879) of Danvers, Essex Co., MA. She reportedly grew up in straightened circumstances. (Aaron Guilford at the time of his death was described in a Salem newspaper as a pauper. He died tragically from exposure when Mary Elizabeth was six years old.) Abigail Guilford was apparently unable to keep the family together and the children were likely taken in by relatives or close friends.

On December 6, 1833, Mary Elizabeth married Daniel Ames (1814-1865) in Saugus, Essex Co. The couple lived on Boston Street in Lynn, Essex Co. where Daniel worked as a teamster. Nine children were born of this union: Jacob (b. 1834), Aaron Guilford (b. 1835), Mary Elizabeth (b. 1838), Daniel Henry (b. ca. 1839), George Franklin (b. 1844), Albert (b. 1845), Daniel Augustus (b. 1850), Norris (b. 1853), and Abraham Warren (b. 1856). After her husband's accidental death in 1865, Mary Elizabeth Guilford Ames maintained the household for her young and unmarried children. She died from cancer at the age of fifty-nine.
