Jacob Ames was the eldest of nine children born to Daniel Ames (1814-1865) and his wife Mary Elizabeth Guilford Ames (1818-1877) of Lynn, Essex Co., MA. He was a contractor and teamster in Lynn. He married first Mary Ellen Goodwin on December 12, 1852 in Lynn. The couple had three sons: Daniel Goodwin (b. 1853), Alvin Augustus (b. 1857) and Frank Ellsworth. (b. 1861). Mary Ellen died from consumption in 1864. Jacob married Phidelia A. Phinney on October 9, 1871 in Lynn. By Phidelia, Jacob had two daughters: Mabel Delia (b. 1874) and Alice May (b. 1881). Phidelia died giving birth to Alice May in the spring of 1881. Jacob died a year later of apoplexy at the age of forty-eight.
