Gertrude (Trudy) Conley Helms, 84, a five year resident of Severna Park, and formerly of Silver Spring, died suddenly on August 1 in Lowell, Massachusetts. Trudy was born in Lowell on October 7, 1924 to the late Thomas H. and Gertrude I. Conley. She was eight when her mother died, so she and her twin brother, Jerry, went to live with her grandmother. She had a beautiful, warm voice, and once sang on the radio-I Believe in Miracles. Shortly before graduating from Lowell High School, she learned that her brother Tom had been killed during the battle of the Coral Sea. So, Trudy came to Washington, D.C. to work for the Army Security Agency as a draftswoman in 1944. She and her friend, Cele, lived in a boarding house called RoCar, and it was there that she met her future husband, Harve Helms, who she married on May 24, 1947. After living in Langley Park, they moved to Silver Spring, where they lived for 45 years.
Trudy was active in volunteering and worked with Meals on Wheels for over 25 years. She was a warm, loving person with a constant smile, who made friends wherever she went. Her positive spirit carried her through many illnesses, and she showed great strength in overcoming these trials. She loved all things Irish, trips to the Maine coast, and spending time with Kara.

Mrs. Helms was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Harve, and her brothers, Jerry and Tom Conley. Survivors include her daughter, Linda Siegert (Greg), cherished granddaughter, Kara Siegert, all of Severna Park; son, Bill Helms (Peg) of Ames, Iowa; loving step-granddaughter, Tami Moen of Roland, Iowa; special cousin, Pat Shaw of Chelmsford, MA; and many loving friends and family members.
