NEWBERN LOSES IT'S OLDEST CITIZEN
James P. Holliday was born Feb. 15, 1815 in Freeport, Ohio, and died at his home in Newbern, Iowa, June 24, 1909, aged 94 years, 4 months and 19 days.
When a young man he gave his heart to the Savior and united with the Presbyterian church, and was always a God fearing and God honoring man. His last words were "Let me die the death of the righteous and let my last end be like his." It can be said of him "Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age."
He was a charter member of the Cain Presbyterian church, 2 and one half miles south of Newbern and was elected an elder at its organization on Aug. 28, 1869, rendering nearly 40 years of continuous service.
On March 22, 1842, he was united in marriage to Ruth A. Grewell, of West Chester, Ohio. Seven children were born to them, five of whom survive. His aged wife is still living to revere his memory.
For several years Mr. Holliday engaged in the mercantile business in Wheeling, West Virginia. About 1852 he moved to Ipava, Ill., and in 1869 he came to Marion county, Iowa, where he has since resided. He was a kind and loving father and will be greatly missed.
The funeral services were held at the Cain church. Services were conducted by Rev. E. Ackley, pastor of the U. B. church, interment taking place in the Spring Hill cemetery.
