My great great grandpa Henry Helfrich died before he was 30 years old and his passing left his widow and family in disarray. His children were spread out, and his wife was in the poorhouse for reasons we do not know clearly. His last child had been born just 6 weeks before he died.

Though he was of age to have served in the Civil War, I have not yet found any evidence he did, or that it contributed to his passing a few years after it had ended. Kind fellow contributor Joe Nihen adds: "He was registered for the draft in 1863 - marked as 22 years of age and a servant in West Penn, Schuylkill County. I also found he was paying taxes in 1864 and 1865 which might suggest he was a civilian." Joe went on to suggest Henry's grave site be checked for clues - maybe it will surprise us and show a Civil War marker anyway. I have since snagged a copy of this Civil War record and attached it to this memorial.

His estate papers make you want to cry. He was deeply in debt, trying to make a go of running a hotel and restaurant from a prime location on Center street in Tamaqua. On behalf of Henry's widow, his father Levi had to sell all his property to try to satisfy his debts.

Beyond this, there's currently little info about Henry, his family, or his demise, but his son William's memorial will shed light on what is known.

Kind contributor Barbara Schwartz was able to provide his burial location from "St. John's Lutheran [and Reformed] Church pastoral records, Tamaqua, Schuylkill Co., Pa" by Claude W. Unger and William H Dietrich. This made me smile, because it means Dietrich, my great grandfather on my dad's side, has helped me find my long lost great great grandpa on my mom's side.
