SALINAS - Putnam Payne died on August 15, 2009 at home. His long battle with emphysema finally ended. He would have been 82 years old on September 1, 2009.

Mr. Payne was a native of Maine, born in Lewiston and raised in York. He was the only son of Gretchen Putnam Payne and former U.S. Senator Frederick G. Payne.

He resided in Salinas since 1969, with the exception of a 1981-1984 Honduras assignment. He graduated from York High School as valedictorian (1944), graduated magna cum laude from Yale University with a Bachelor of Science degree in botany (1949), and graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a Master of Science degree in horticulture (1953). In 1953, he was employed by United Fruit Company (now known as Chiquita Brand International) in its Division of Tropical Research in La Lima, Honduras, Central America. It was there that he met his wife, Zoila.

Mr. Payne's entire professional career was spent as an employee of United Fruit Company and its subsidiaries. This included a total of 10 years in Honduras, 11 years in Salinas, and one year in the Dominican Republic. His responsibilities included agricultural research, financial analysis and planning. He retired in 1985 as Associate Director of Tropical Research. He was a member of the Honorary Fraternity Phi Beta Kappa, and an associate member of the Honorary Scientific Fraternity Sigma Xi.

Mr. Payne is survived by his wife of 53 years, Zoila O. Payne of Salinas; their son, Thomas C. Payne of Long Beach, California; their daughter, Sharilyn R. Payne of Pacific Grove; and a first cousin, Roger A. Putnam of Portland, Maine. Mr. Payne was a wonderful husband and father, and a true gentleman. He will be sorely missed.

The family held a private memorial service for Mr. Payne. At his request, his ashes will be scattered at sea off Point Lobos State Park. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice. Published in the Monterey Herald on 8/25/2009.
