He married Ruth L. Lenz on May 20, 1949. She survives in New Castle.
He was a graduate of the former Harlansburg High School. He was employed in the line department at Penn Power from 1946 until his retirement in 1983. He served in the Army Signal Corps during World War II in the South Pacific. He was a member of the Neshannock Lions Club, Second Wind Running Club, the Paws and Taws and was a former master of the Liberty Grange. He competed in the Senior Olympics in both Arizona and Pennsylvania and hiked the Grand Canyon at age 75. He was an avid Steelers and Pirates fan and also enjoyed coaching Little League and American Legion baseball, raising sheep and gardening.He was a 59-year member of New Wilmington Presbyterian Church, where he was and elder, deacon and Sunday school teacher.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, Richard D. and Sharon McCracken of Vernon, Conn., and James R. McCracken of Clinton, Conn.; a brother, Clair McCracken of Hickory, Pa.; a sister, Lois Henneman of New Castle; two grandchildren, Ian and Sarah McCracken of Vernon, Conn., and Eric McCracken of Tucson, Ariz.; and one great-granddaughter, Anna McCracken. He was preceded in death by a son, David F. McCracken; three brothers, Everett, Ralph and Samuel D. McCracken; and two sisters, Bertha Alben and Jessie Stevenson Shafer.
A memorial service will be announced by the family later. Burial will be in Mount Hermon Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorial contributions be made to New Wilmington Presbyterian Church, 229 S. Market St., New Wilmington, Pa. 16142; the Neshannock Lions Club, in care of Jeff Cox, 101 Ludwig Road, New Castle, Pa. 16105; or the Robert D.
