Bessie's birth date of June 8, 1908 would be in error on the gravestone. It should have read June 15, 1908. Bessie and her sister Tessie were twins and were born on the same day, June 15, 1908.
Bessie L. Abney was the 3rd born of 8 children and 3rd daughter of 5, plus a twin to Tessie, the 4th born daughter. Not knowing who came first, one can suspect they possibly named them alphabetically, Bessie being 1st and Tessie being next.
Bessie was born to James Wilson Abney b.29 Jul 1877 in Cumberland Co., KY & d.15 Oct 1968 in Barren Co., KY, although Knob Lick, Metcalfe Co., KY was his normal residence, -and to- Ary Akin b.Sep 1883 in Cumberland Co., KY & d.bef 1955 in Knob Lick, Metcalfe Co., KY and who were married abt 1901 in Cumberland Co., KY.
She married John F. Smith abt 1924 in Cumberland Co, Ky John F. Smith was b.1 Jan 1900 in Summer Shade, Metcalfe Co., KY & d.unknown (at this time).
To my knowledge, Bessie and John only had one child, who was:
1. Ralph Douglas Smith b.22 Sep 1925 in Metcalfe Co., Ky & d.9 Oct 2013 in Newburgh, Warrick Co., IN.
Married: Virginia Lee Smith
Unfortunately, a sad note that the most of the children of the Abney family ended up having Pulmonary Tuberculosis, which is what Bessie died of at the young age of 34.
