LaVon Earl Lake, age 87, passed away on Saturday, August 22, 2009, after an extended illness.

She was born January 19, 1922 in South Weber, Utah to Clarence Charles and Alice Myrtle Kendell Earl.

LaVon attended Davis High, where she was Student Body Vice President, graduating in 1940; Weber College, where she was Student Body Vice President, graduating in 1942; and Penn State University, where she was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi, graduating in 1957 with a B.S. degree.

LaVon married L. Bruce Lake on December 23, 1942 in the Salt Lake Temple. She was a loving mother to her two children, famous for her incredibly fast but well prepared meals. While Bruce was still in the military she moved every two or three years as assignments took Bruce and LaVon to Japan and various postings in the United States.

When Bruce retired from the military, they moved back to South Ogden, where they lived until 1996 when they moved to St. George.

LaVon taught College Prep English and American History at Clearfield High from 1961 until 1982, influencing the lives of thousands of high school seniors. She was particularly gratified so many of her former students frequently returned to visit and tell her of their fond memories of those years.

LaVon as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where she had various callings, the last being a St. George Temple worker. She was a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers and the Ogden Chapter of the American Association of University Women.

LaVon was an avid golfer; she and Bruce won many tournaments as members of the Ogden and Wolf Creek Country Clubs. LaVon loved to visit with family and friends and nothing could keep her from attending a high school or a family reunion.

She was especially proud of her magnum opus, her life story, which she worked on for several years before declaring that she had finally completed it.

LaVon is survived by her husband, Bruce; son, Roger B. Lake, St. George; daughter, Christine Lake (Heber) Jacobson, Salt Lake City; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Norma Allred, Layton; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, mother, step-mother, and six brothers.

Her radiant smile has been missed by her descendants since she became ill, but there are many beautiful memories that her children and grandchildren will cherish for the rest of their lives, especially her willingness to keep the food coming until there was no room left to put it. She will also be remembered for her "goodie packets" given to any and all as they left her house.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. in the Bloomington Sixth Ward Chapel, 3519 Manzanita Road, St. George, UT. There will be a viewing held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. prior to the services at the Church.
A Graveside Service will take place on Thursday, August 27, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Leavitt's Altorest Memorial Park, 836 36th Street, Ogden, UT.
