55th Massachusetts Governor, US Senator. He graduated from Harvard University in 1914 and then three years later, from the university's law school. He enlisted in the United States Army when the United States entered World War I, and served in France as a 1st Lieutenant in the 301st Field Artillery, 76th Infantry Division, AEF. After his military service, he was admitted to the Massachusetts State Bar Association and began a private practice in Boston, Massachusetts. He served as a member of the board of aldermen of Newton, Massachusetts, as well as assistant district attorney for Middlesex County, Massachusetts, from 1920 to 1922. In 1922, he was elected to the Massachusetts State House of Representatives and served until 1936 when he ran unsuccessfully as the Lieutenant Governor candidate on the Republican ticket. During his State House tenure, he served as the Speaker of the House from 1929 to 1936. In 1938, he ran for the governorship of Massachusetts and was successful in the November general election. He went on to serve as Governor for six years before winning a special election in 1944 to fill the United States Senate seat of Republican Henry Cabot Lodge, who had resigned. While Governor he served as Chair of the National Governors Association from 1943 to 1944. He served in the Senate for three terms before stepping down in 1967. While in the Senate, he chaired both the Senate Armed Services Committee and the Senate Republican Conference. He also served as the Republican Whip during his Senate tenure. His Senate record was moderate and he was known for his skills to compromise. After leaving politics, he retired to his farm in Dover, Massachusetts.
