Joseph Nestle enlisted as a private in Company I of the Reorganized Third Michigan Infantry on September 30, 1864, for 3 years, at age 17. He was transferred into Company H of the Reorganized Fourth Michigan Infantry on October 10, 1864. Promoted to Corporal on October 1, 1865. Mustered out of service on May 26, 1866, at Houston, Texas.
