Brother Edward Behan, F.S.C. was a member of the De La Salle Christian Brothers and died at the Mont La Salle Holy Family Community in Napa, California. The De La Salle Christian Brothers are the Catholic Church's largest congregation of religious Brothers devoted exclusively to education. Brother Edward was born Leroy McDonald in Aberdeen, South Dakota. He received the habit August 14, 1932 at Mont La Salle in Napa, California and made final vows June 29, 1941 at St. Mary's College in Moraga, California. He was Vocation Director for the Province from 1946 to 1963. He also served as Director of the Brothers' Community at St. Mary's College and Mont La Salle. Brother Edward was involved in the publication of Contact, a magazine of vocation outreach, and wrote frequent articles within its pages. He was also instrumental in the formation of Les Amis des Freres, an alumni association for Juniorate, Novitiate and former Brothers. Brother Edward was intrigued by the religious mystic Cora Evans, and his files contain a biography and many of her writings. At the time of his death, he worked in the Office of Development at De La Salle High School in Concord, California. He is buried in the Brothers Cemetery at Mont La Salle in Napa, California. Brother Edward dedicated his life to The Lord and to the ministry of education.

"Saints have walked these very halls — like Brother Edward Behan. Brother Edward continues to be an inspiration in my life, particularly when I struggle. I remember visiting the Brothers at Mont La Salle in Napa a few years after I graduated from De La Salle. After dinner I walked by the chapel and saw Brother Ed on his knees before the Blessed Sacrament having what can only be described as a gentle conversation with a close friend. It remains my vision of what a relationship with Jesus can be. I guarantee you, gentlemen, Brother Edward prays for you each and every day. His death has only brought him closer to his best friend. You are lucky indeed to have someone so close to Jesus putting in a good word for you."

The paragraph above is part of a homily by Father Mike Gilson, S.J., given at De La Salle High School in Concord, California, November 2007

Day by day,
Day by day.
Oh dear Lord,
Three things I pray.
For myself, and,
each one dear to me;
To see thee more clearly,
To love thee more dearly ,
To follow thee more nearly,
Day by day,
Day by day.
