Egyptian Pharaoh. He was the last ruler of Egypt's Sixth Dynasty and his reign marked the end of the so called "Old Kingdom". He came to the throne in 2278 BC when he was only six years old and several statues survive representing him as tiny adult wearing the royal headdress. He is believed to have ruled for up to ninety four years, the longest reign in Egyptian history. In the course of his reign he gradually lost power to local governors who became increasingly independent of central government. His attempts to buy their loyalty only succeeded in reducing his own wealth and increasing their status and when he died in 2184 BC there followed a period of unrest known as the First Intermediate Period.
