John Hilary Dowling was the son of Francis Xavier Dowling and Susan Hagan Dowling. He was married to Eliza Jane Smith Dowling. They were the parents of three children that lived to adulthood; Mary Josephine Dowling Nalley, Melissa Isabel Dowling Carrico, and William Edward Dowling. Another child, Elizabeth Susan Dowling, was born on October 16, 1887 and died August 19,1888.
