Alvin J. Richmeier, 80, of Garden City, died Monday, Sept. 14, 2009, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born Nov. 15, 1928, in St. Peter, to Peter and Marcianna Appelhans Richmeier. He grew up helping on the farm and attended St. Anthony School in St. Peter.

In the late 1940s, Mr. Richmeier moved to Garden City, where he worked as a farm laborer and then as a tractor mechanic for John Deere. In 1950, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving with the 412th Engineers & Construction Battalion. While in the Army, he was stationed at Fort Carson, Colo., and Camp Roberts, Calif. He attended Engineering School for the Army in Virginia and helped construct a test station in Arizona before returning home to Garden City, where he worked as a furniture salesman and also helped install carpet for Robinson's Furniture. In the late 1970s, he worked as an automobile mechanic for Burtis Motors.

Mr. Richmeier was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed woodworking, dancing, and playing the organ and the accordion, was a good singer and loved spending time with his family. He was known for his wonderful sense of humor.

On July 18, 1951, he married Mary Richmeier at St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City. She survives. Other survivors include three sons, Darrell, Maynard and Loran Richmeier, all of Garden City; three daughters, Carol Jean "Jeannie" Frizzell, Maryann Gosch and Lynett Becker, all of Garden City; two brothers, Ben Richmeier of Rome, Ga., and Cletus Richmeier of Thornton, Colo.; two sisters, Flora Stadler of Longmont, Colo., and Josephine Rupp of Garden City; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Herbert Richmeier; and two sisters, Teckla Schiffelbein and Sister Petrina Richmeier.

A vigil service was at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. Funeral Mass was at St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City. Burial was at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Garden City.
