John was born in County Down, Ireland. He married Jean Elder in 1796 in Ireland. She died in 1809. He remarried Margaret Jamieson in 1810. He died at his home in E. Mahoning Twp., Indiana Co., PA.

John and Jean were the parents of 6 children:
1. Jean (Jane) Hopkins Cunningham
2. Ann Hopkins (died at sea on the voyage from Ireland)
3. William Hopkins
4. Ann Hopkins Lewis
5. Rebecca Hopkins (never married)
6. John Hopkins (died young)

John and Margaret were the parents of 9 children:
1. Martha Hopkins Hamilton
2. Margaret Hopkins Work
3. Mary Hopkins Work Stewart Sadler

The obit at left is from his son, John and is taken from the Indiana Weekly Messenger, 3 May 1899. It supports that his father, John Hopkins, was indeed the father of 15 children, and names two still living.
