Rev. Bernardinus Abbink was born in Cleveland, Ohio the oldest of 7 children born to Herman and Hendricka Abbink, natives of Holland. The family moved to Illinois in 1850. He entered the seminary at the age of 12. After ordination, he was stationed at Cross Village, Michigan. He was appointed the post of Chaplain of the Old Peoples home, in Avilla, Indiana in 1896 where he remained until his death.
