Brother Andrew Angermeier, CSC

Born in Evansville, Indiana on Apr. 30, 1922
Departed on Jan. 2, 2009 and resided in Austin, TX.

Wake Service: Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009
Service: Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009

Brother Andrew Angermeier was born on April 30, 1922, in Evansville, Indiana, the third child and oldest boy of eight children of Oscar Angermeier and Wilfrieda Rexing Angermeier. His father Oscar spent his life as a machinist. Andrew was baptized at St. Benedict Church in Evansville on May 2, 1922. He was eventually confirmed at St. Joseph Parish in German Township, Indiana, where he also attended elementary school.

In 1936, he entered Reitz Memorial High School in Evansville, Indiana, but he only was a student there for one year. At the beginning of his sophomore year, he transferred to Sacred Heart College in Watertown, Wisconsin, where he also became a candidate for the Brothers of Holy Cross. He graduated from Sacred Heart in 1940 and entered St. Joseph Novitiate in Rolling Prairie, Indiana, on August 15, 1940. He made his first vows there on August 16, 1941, and pronounced his perpetual vows as a Brother of Holy Cross at Sacred Heart Basilica on the University of Notre Dame campus on August 16, 1944. For the first part of his life as a brother, he was known as Brother Carroll; he dropped that to return to his baptismal name of Andrew in 1973.

Brother Andrew earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1945 and a master's degree from there in 1952. His major field of study was English. He also earned a master of library science degree in 1955 from St. John's University in Brooklyn, New York and later a Ph.D. in 1970 from the University of Texas in Austin with English again his major field of study.

Although most people remember him for his fifty years associated with St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas, he also taught at Vincentian Institute in Albany, New York; at Cathedral High School in Indianapolis, Indiana; at St. Edward High School in Lakewood, Ohio; and at Archbishop Hoban High School in Akron, Ohio. He began his work as librarian at St. Edward's University in 1956 and spent nearly fifty years as part of the university as a librarian and a professor of English.

While serving as a professor of English, he also served for a time as superior of the local community of the Brothers of Holy Cross on the campus or as the Assistant Superior for many years. In his spare time, he loved to "tinker" and do minor maintenance and painting. He spent many a summer in volunteer work around the country doing maintenance in the works associated with Holy Cross.

Following kidney surgery in April, Brother Andrew never regained his strength. He passed away peacefully on January 2, 2009, under hospice care at the age of 85.

He was preceded in death by his father, Oscar in 1974; his mother, Wilfrieda in 1976; sister, Lucille Angermeier in 1992; brother, Henry in 1995.

Brother Andrew is survived by three sisters, Sister Carol Ann Angermeier, order of St. Francis, Oldenburg, IN, Mary Lou Carroll and husband Robert of Lexington, KY; sister-in-law, Maralee Angermeier of Green Bay, WI, Rita Greder and husband Ken of Newburgh; two brothers, Walter and wife Virginia of Indianapolis, Leonard and wife Susann of Evansville; eighteen nieces and nephews; twenty nine great nieces and nephews; two great-great nieces and nephews.

Andrew will be greatly missed by his loving family and friends.

Memorial contributions may be made to Brothers of Holy Cross, 921 St. Edward's Drive, Austin, Texas 78704; or to a favorite charity.

A wake service was held at Our Lady of Peace Chapel on the St. Edward's University campus on Tuesday, January 6, 2009, with the Mass of the Christian burial celebrated on Wednesday, January 7, 2009. Interment followed at Assumption Cemetery in the area reserved for the Congregation of Holy Cross.
